Our teaching contributes to many aspects of the full-time undergraduate programmes in the School of Biosciences.
In addition, we provide a part-time course leading to MSc in Ornithology, which is unique within Europe. We are also keen to offer supervision to people wishing to gain an MPhil or PhD through either full-time or part-time research and study, and we especially welcome self-financing mature candidates.
The next course starts in September 2010. The courses is now full. However, we maintain a waiting list and you can also apply now to gain priority next time recruitment takes place: read on for details
MSc in Ornithology
(With intermediate awards of Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma)
Starting September 2010
These part-time programmes present a flexible way of gaining advanced level knowledge and understanding about the biology and ecology of birds, their conservation, and how ornithological problems and issues can be investigated. The overall aim is to provide an easily accessible range of opportunities for professional training in the science of ornithology that is appropriate for either a career, or voluntary activity, in ornithology and nature conservation.
The programmes consist of a single core of modules with different levels of entry and study that are appropriate to different levels of prior learning and achievement. All teaching takes place at weekends at the University of Birmingham campus in Edgbaston (a full day’s teaching on Saturdays at approximately monthly intervals) plus a block weekend and a block week each year away from Birmingham run in conjunction with the British Trust for Ornithology. This course structure, and its timetabling, means that these programmes are open to people who are in full- or part-time employment. It is possible to enrol for one year's study at a time rather than commit yourself to the full 2 or 3 years for the full award.
