The first cohort of students from the MSc in Ornithology programme received their degrees on Friday December 11th. It was a day of celebration for all with our ornithology students receiving their degrees from the University Vice Chancellor in the spectacular graduation ceremony in the University Great Hall. The first person to receive the first ever award of a degree in ornithology from a British University was Patrick Bailey, the most senior member of the cohort who, although looking the part of a distinguished graduate, was uncomfortable without his binoculars (see photo below left). After graduation there was a reception in the School of Biosciences followed by an evening meal. Mike Smith said afterwards, “I thought the graduation ceremony was the most spectacular that I have ever attended and so was especially pleased to have been part of it”. He also added that the course had changed his life. We assume from the smile on his face that he meant it was changed for the better! (see photo bottom)
