Centre for Ornithology at the IOC

Over 1000 ornithologists from all over the world recently attended the 25th International Ornithological Congress in Brazil. The IOC brings together scientists and conservationists from all over the world every four years to catch up with research and issues at the fore front of ornithology. At this year’s congress the Centre for Ornithology was represented by 8 people who all contributed either posters or seminar papers about their recent work, and Graham Martin presented an invited plenary lecture which summarised aspects of his research completed over recent years. Steve Portugal, Jim Reynolds, Simone Webber, Pat Butler and Katy Jones presented posters and Golo Maurer, Jen Smith and Steve Portugal presented seminar papers. The venue for the meeting was the small town of Campos do Jordao high in the mountains in a region dominated by Arucaria forest. Bird watching was excellent and everyone increased their bird lists and also made many new contacts and laid plans for collaborations with ornithologists across the world. The next IOC will be Japan in 2014.
