Research from the supplementary feeding study carried out by members of the Centre for Ornithology has featured prominently in the last few weeks in the local and national media. As a result of Dr Jim Reynolds providing an invited talk at the UFAW (Universities Federation for Animal Welfare) International Symposium entitled “Wild Bird care in the Garden” at the Institute of Zoology, London, the research was described in New Scientist (10/4/10), The Daily Mail (8/4/10) and The Daily Telegraph (8/4/10). Furthermore, Jim also appeared on BBC WM when he discussed disease transfer at bird feeders in towns and cities. Since then, the study’s field site has hosted the BBC, with a piece about the study appearing on Midlands Today next week (6:30pm on 4/6/10). Research findings were also featured on the BBC website on 27/5/10 and another piece about whether the public should feed garden birds will appear soon after that on BBC WM. Ornithology continues to feature prominently in local news coverage with Professor Graham Martin appearing on Midlands Today on Bank Holiday Monday (31/5/10) where he talked about the mixed breeding success of Birmingham’s Peregrine Falcons, a pair of which are present here on the University campus.
